As Singapore allows more visitors to enter the country, Singapore manages to detect and quarantine infected visitors.

This has served Singapore well, even when Singapore allowed visitors from highly infected countries or countries with infectious strains to enter. However, things quickly changed when India became highly infected in April.

Many citizens called for the government to restrict travel to India and reduce visitors from India, but no actions were taken. When it was clear that India had a new strain that was much more infectious, citizens requested a review on the travel policies but it resulted in statements like what Lawrence Wong said, “Singapore cannot shut borders for survival”

We are requesting a temporary closure to prevent visitors from India from entering Singapore until we have better information about the virus. Just like what happened last year where the government insists on opening the borders while the spread is ongoing globally and not restricting travels from the highly infected countries.

From the experience, we had during this whole pandemic, I do strongly feel that we need to relook into certain industries. Reliance on foreign workers in many industries is inefficient and causes us to transport, house these foreign workers. Although they may cost low in terms of salaries, our
