I’ve always loved the BMW K100. It has always been a reliable bike that has a lot of available parts at a relatively low cost.
The first BMW K100 came out in 1983, and it was pricey back then, but years later, you can still find many BMW K100 on the roads. Why? Because the engines are really durable!
My BMW K100RS and K100RT served me well. They were kinda well used when I got them, and there was nothing much to maintain. Here are some tips which I follow whenever I get a used motorcycle.
- Check Spark Plugs, Air Filter, Brake oil, Engine Oil, Brake Disc, Brake Pads, Tires (threads remaining and year of manufacture) These are basic safety things which is easy to check to get bike road worthy. They are also things which are wear and tear, so replacing them if they don’t look so good would be something that should be done.
- Check for possible leaks. Look for leaks along gaskets, oil seals, o-rings… Wash the bike, ride it a bit and look at the fork, do you feel any oil on the forks? Are there leaks near the radiator, are there any leaks around the engine/gearbox? A lot of these minor leaks may just need gaskets which is an easy fix.
