Paper Prototyping

Paper prototyping is cutting paper, sketching screenshots on paper, and testing the usability of a phone app.

For some, it is drawing on a piece of paper, cutting up bits of paper to rapidly test and develop board games.

I’ve personally used it to design and plan the layout of my storeroom, there are so many uses where drawing on a piece of paper, cutting out pieces try it out, and iterate to test the design to find the one that works best.

Even when there are various tools available online, I do find paper prototyping very effective. The fact that it looks unfinished, gives it an advantage.

  1. Users are more open to give criticism. (The fact that it looks raw, they feel more comfortable in giving suggestions.)
  2. Parts can be moved around and easily arranged. (Instead of drawing the whole design again with a minor change)
  3. Paper-drawn designs can be used to test concepts like any other designs.
  4. Allows users to give essential feedback.
  5. Creates a convenient way to test the user interface and allows quick iterations on the fly based on feedback received.
